| Chongqing used to be a part of Sichuan province but was municipalized
in 1997. Since then, it has become the biggest economic centre in
the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Being at the confluence of
the Yangtze River and Jialingjiang River, Yu, the abbreviation of
its capital city C Chongqing is named after it. The region covers
a land area of 82,403 sq. km and has 1,405,000 ha of cultivated land
(4,500 ha of sloping lands between 5 to 25 degrees and 36,200 ha >25
degrees). By the end of 2001 the total population reached 30,979,000
with 1,974,000 people as minorities. |

| Hong Kong is located in the Far East, just south of the Tropic of
Cancer. Hong Kong Island is 32km (20 miles) east of the mouth of Pearl
River and 135km (84 miles) southeast of Canton. It is separated from
the mainland by a good natural harbour. Hong Kong Island was ceded
to Britain in 1842 by the Treaty of Nanking; and the Kowloon Peninsula
(south of Boundary Street and Stonecutters Island) in 1860 by the
Convention of Peking.

| Hanging from China's gigantic underbelly on its southeastern coast,
Macau covers all of 28 sq. km (11 sq. miles). About 64km (40 miles)
west of Hong Kong across the Pearl River Estuary, it served as Portugal's
last holdout in Asia until 1999, when it was handed back to China.
Portugal's other former Asian strongholds, Goa and Malacca, had long
before been claimed by neighboring powers.

| Anhui Province in east China is situated in the middle and lower

| Fujian Province faces Taiwan Province across the Taiwan Straits.
It is situated 115'50"-120'47" east longitude and 23'30"-28'19"
north latitude with an area of more than 120,000 square kilometers.
Mountains and hills make up the vast majority of Fujian's territory,
while only narrow strips of the east seaside are plains. Fujian has
a zigzag coastline of 2,120 kilometers dotted with 1,202 offshore
islands, with a fishing area of 136,000 square kilometers. Most of
its rivers empty into the sea separately.

| Guizhou province is called "Qian" or "Gui" for
its short forms. Located on the eastern slope of Yunnan--Guizhou Plateau,
Guizhou borders provinces (region and municipality) of Hunan, Guangxi,
Yunnan, Sichuan and Chongqing to the east, south, west, and north
respectively. The province becomes an important access to the sea
and a transportation hub for Southwest China.

| Hainan Province, called "Qiong" for short, is situated
in the southernmost of China. Haikou is its capital. The island, rising
from the vast South China Sea, has a total population of 6,150,800
and a population density of 181 people per square kilometre (1987

Nansha, Xisha, Zhongsha islands, etc. It also has three municipalities,

| Heilongjiang Province, abbreviated as Hei in Chinese, is located
in the Northeast of China, at the highest latitudes and the northernmost
end of the country. It neighbors Russia across the Heilongjiang and
Wusuli rivers running in its north and east respectively; in the west,
it adjoins the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region; and to its south
is Jilin Province. It covers an area of 454,000 square km, accounting
for 4.7 percent of the nations total. |

| Henan, an agricultural province, in the middle-lower Yellow River
valley, derived its name from the greater part of the province's lying
south of the Yellow River. One of the earliest developed regions in
the country, it was a political and cultural center in ancient China.
In the remote past, China was divided into nine geographical regions,
and Henan was called the "Central Region " or "Central
Plain" because it was situated in the middle of the nine regions.

| Originally the southern part of Mongolia, the area known as Inner
Mongolia was settled by powerful nomadic Mongolian tribes centuries
ago. Later, in the sixteenth century, the Manchu Empire annexed it
from the northern Mongolians after many bloody battles. They took
possession and renamed the area Inner Mongolia.

| Jiangsu province lies in the center of China's east coast with the
total land coverage of 10.26 square kilometers occupying 1.06% of
the whole country's territory, occupiing the southern part of the
North China plains and the plains of the Lower Reaches of the Yangtze
River. Its landform is mainly plain with lots of rivers and lakes
among which there are the third biggest freshwater lake of China,
Taihu Lake, and the fourth biggest, Hongze Lake. |

| Jiangxi lies in the lower middle reaches of the south flank of the
Yangtze River, over-looking the Dageng Mountain ranges and the Jiulian

| The pre-history of Taiwan can be traced back 50,000-30,000 years.
At that time, the island and the mainland were linked, and thus archaeologists
generally agree that the paleolithic cultures discovered on Taiwan
are related to those found on the mainland. By the end of the last
glacier epoch around 18,000-10,000 years ago, the island was separated
from mainland. The archaeological findings indicated that different
groups of people moved to Taiwan from the southeast coast of mainland
and from Southeast Asia in different times and created the neolithic
cultures and metal cultures on the island. |

The Tibet Autonomous Region is located in the southwest part of
