Being at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Jialingjiang River, Yu, the abbreviation of its capital city C Chongqing is named after it. The region covers a land area of 82,403 sq. km and has 1,405,000 ha of cultivated land (4,500 ha of sloping lands between 5 to 25 degrees and 36,200 ha >25 degrees). By the end of 2001 the total population reached 30,979,000 with 1,974,000 people as minorities.

Hong Kong -a shopping paradise
Hong Kong is located in the Far East, just south of the Tropic of Cancer. Hong Kong Island is 32km (20 miles) east of the mouth of Pearl River and 135km (84 miles) southeast of Canton. It is separated from the mainland by a good natural harbour. Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain in 1842 by the Treaty of Nanking; and the Kowloon Peninsula (south of Boundary Street and Stonecutters Island) in 1860 by the Convention of Peking.

Macau - East Las Vegas
Hanging from China's gigantic underbelly on its southeastern coast, Macau covers all of 28 sq. km (11 sq. miles). About 64km (40 miles) west of Hong Kong across the Pearl River Estuary, it served as Portugal's last holdout in Asia until 1999, when it was handed back to China. Portugal's other former Asian strongholds, Goa and Malacca, had long before been claimed by neighboring powers.

Anhui Province in east China is situated in the middle and lower valleys of the Yangtze and Huaihe rivers. It was named after the first character of the names of its two cities, Anqing and Huizhou. It has an area of more than 130,000 square kilometers and a population of 48.92 million, of which 6.63 million live in the cities and the rest in the countryside.

Fujian Province faces Taiwan Province across the Taiwan Straits. It is situated 115'50"-120'47" east longitude and 23'30"-28'19" north latitude with an area of more than 120,000 square kilometers. Mountains and hills make up the vast majority of Fujian's territory, while only narrow strips of the east seaside are plains. Fujian has a zigzag coastline of 2,120 kilometers dotted with 1,202 offshore islands, with a fishing area of 136,000 square kilometers. Most of its rivers empty into the sea separately.

This Northwest China Province on the upper reaches of the Yellow River has an area of 455, 000 sq km inhabited by 23,450,000 people of Han, Hui, Tibetan, Mongol and eight other ethnic groups. The provincial capital is Lanzhou, Northwest China's largest industrial center situated on the western terminus of the Longhai Railway -- the country's major east-west trunk line.

Guangdong is located in the southern part of the south China Sea, encompassing a total 179,766 square kilometres. From north to south, the altitudes of landforms decreases. The highest mountain is the Shikengkong peak with a height of 1902 m above sea level. The mountain and hill areas cover most of Guangdong without many plains. There are many rivers such as the Zhujiang River (Pearl River), which is composed of the Xijiang River, the Beijiang River, the Dongjiang River, the Hanjiang River, the Rongjiang River and the Moyangjiang River.

Guizhou province is called "Qian" or "Gui" for its short forms. Hainan Province, called "Qiong" for short, is situated in the southernmost of China. Haikou is its capital. Heilongjiang Province, abbreviated as Hei in Chinese, is located in the Northeast of China, at the highest latitudes and the northernmost end of the country. It neighbors Russia across the Heilongjiang and Wusuli rivers running in its north and east respectively; in the west, it adjoins the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region; and to its south is Jilin Province. It covers an area of 454,000 square km, accounting for 4.7 percent of the nations total.

Henan, an agricultural province, in the middle-lower Yellow River valley, derived its name from the greater part of the province's lying south of the Yellow River. One of the earliest developed regions in the country, it was a political and cultural center in ancient China. In the remote past, China was divided into nine geographical regions, and Henan was called the "Central Region " or "Central Plain" because it was situated in the middle of the nine regions.

Hubei is situated in central China, extending across two major river systems - the Yangtze and Hanjiang. Originally the southern part of Mongolia, the area known as Inner Mongolia was settled by powerful nomadic Mongolian tribes centuries ago. Later, in the sixteenth century, the Manchu Empire annexed it from the northern Mongolians after many bloody battles. They took possession and renamed the area Inner Mongolia.

Jiangsu province lies in the center of China's east coast with the total land coverage of 10.26 square kilometers occupying 1.06% of the whole country's territory, occupiing the southern part of the North China plains and the plains of the Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River. Its landform is mainly plain with lots of rivers and lakes among which there are the third biggest freshwater lake of China, Taihu Lake, and the fourth biggest, Hongze Lake.

Lying on the East China seaboard where the Yellow River empties into the sea, Shandong Province forms a part of a large peninsula that thrusts far out into the Yellow Sea. Shanxi Province, abbreviated as Jin, is situated in northern China, and adjacent to Hebei, Henan, Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi. It is so-called for its location on the west side of Taihang Mountains. Covering an area of over 150,000 square kilometers, Shanxi has a population of 32.97 million, which embracies the Hans, Huis, Manchurians, Mongolians, and other ethnic peoples.

The pre-history of Taiwan can be traced back 50,000-30,000 years. At that time, the island and the mainland were linked, and thus archaeologists generally agree that the paleolithic cultures discovered on Taiwan are related to those found on the mainland. By the end of the last glacier epoch around 18,000-10,000 years ago, the island was separated from mainland. The archaeological findings indicated that different groups of people moved to Taiwan from the southeast coast of mainland and from Southeast Asia in different times and created the neolithic cultures and metal cultures on the island.

The Tibet Autonomous Region is located in the southwest part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It borders on Sichuan and Yunnan provinces to the east, Qinghai and Xinjiang to the north, and shares borders with India, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Burma to the south, and bounded by Kashmir to the west.
The region covers more than 1.2 million square kilometers, accounting for one eighth of Chinas total land mass, and ranking second in China.
